A Lifetime’s Not Too Long to Live as Friends

It was a last day of summer church camp staple. We’d join hands and hold them high above our heads, tears streaming down our acne-covered faces, while some aspiring X-Factor wanna-be would nervously squeak out the words to the cheesiest song in the history of Christian music:

Friends are friends forever, if the Lord’s the Lord of them
And a friend will not say never, cause a welcome will not end
Though it’s hard to let you go, in the Father’s hands we know
That a lifetime’s not too long to live as friends

Didn’t even have to Google those lyrics. They’re stuck in my brain. Forever.

But even though I love to mock pubescent emotional overindulgence, there’s so much truth in that schmaltz.

Last night Mandy and I celebrated the thirty-tenth birthday of our dearest friend, Tricia LaGrange (we call her Trish because we’re just that tight) with her hubby Nathan (we put the pretty ones in the picture).

We ate too much, we laughed too much, and we indulged a little bit too much in the beautiful gift of friendship.

After 15 years of joy, sorrow, songwriting, success, mistakes, elation, frustration, world travel, way too much Mexican food, and now church planting, Nathan and Trish are still two of my favorite people to be with.

And that, my friends, is a gift (and perhaps a bit of a miracle) worth celebrating.

So today I’m throwing up my hands and belting it out. Letting the tears of joy roll down my acne-covered face (seriously, do zits finally go away when you hit 40?). Let’s make plans now to celebrate your thirty-fiftieth birthday together, too, Trishy.

‘Cause a lifetime’s not too long to live as friends.

  1. I didn’t know that it’s the cheesiest song in history of Christian Music. I have some rather important memories connected with that song. Are my memories cheesy too. BTW, what is cheesy? I really like that song. It says alot. P.S. Glad you had a great time with your friends even though you are way beyond adolescence.

  2. Cheesy is sappy. Overly emotional. Schmaltzy. And just because it’s cheesy doesn’t mean it’s not effective. 🙂 I have quite fond memories of that song as well.

  3. Beautiful! Love how God answered my prayers for you to have iron-sharpening friends. Tricia and Nathan are just that! So thankful God brought you guys together…what an adventure!!!
