Those Lying Little Voices

I hear voices. Not the kind that require medical intervention (at least I don’t think). The kind I’m guessing you hear, too. Voices that whisper our value, how we’re doing, what we’re capable of, or how we’re measuring up to others.

I’ve started to think mine might be a Vegas showman or at least a Casino odds-man, because they’re usually extremely confident they knows exactly what you’re thinking, too.

Unfortunately, these voices rarely deal in encouragements, like “Sure, you can do it,” or “Yes, you’re beautiful,” or “I’m absolutely confident that was the right call.” They usually roll their (imaginary) eyes and proclaim things like:

“No way you can pull that off.”

“Who are you to think you can do that?”

“If your nose just wasn’t so big.”

“Don’t you dare put that idea on the table.”

“She’s got way more right to speak into that issue than you do.”

“Why in the world did you wear that?”

“You’ll just be rejected again.”

“I bet their kids never mess up like this.”

“You’re not qualified.”

Or one of my favorites….

“Everyone has this figured out except you.”

Here’s the thing we all need to remember about all these swirling internal voices – they are compulsive liars. It’s time to point it out. To call their bluff. To confront them with truth.

My mother showered me with this verse when I was a child. Before difficult tests. Before big piano recitals. As I stepped to the plate in little league. But thankfully, its truth permeates our grown up challenges as well:

“For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.”
-Philippians 4:13 NLT

Or I love how it read in the Message paraphrase….

“Whatever I have, wherever I am, I can make it through anything in the One who makes me who I am.”
–Philippians 4:13 MSG

Whatever you’re facing today – big or small – face it with this truth. Those whispering voices are liars. The voice of your Father is saying – “in Me you can, in me you’re worth it, in me you can do anything.” Let’s get to it.
